Mealtime meltdown
Dinner just turned into a standoff and you're hungry and done.
Try saying
- “Looks like dinner is hard tonight.”
Refuses dinner, melting at the table
- “You don't have to eat. You do have to stay with us.”

- “We can try again at breakfast.”

For each age
Preschool (3–5)
- “Looks like dinner is hard tonight.”
- “You don't have to eat. You do have to stay with us.”
- “We can try again at breakfast.”
Forcing food at a meltdown teaches a fight about food. Lowering the stakes ends the standoff.
School (5–12)
- “I can tell something's off. It doesn't have to be about the food.”
- “You can sit with us without eating.”
- “We'll have something later if you're hungry.”
Older kids read pressure as control. Removing pressure restores choice and usually the appetite.
