After-school decompress

Pickup just happened and your kid is wound tight or shut down.

Try saying

“No questions, I promise. Snack first.” Quiet, withdrawn pickup at 3pm
“Tell me later, or don't. Either is fine.” Quiet, withdrawn pickup at 3pm
“I'm glad you're home.” Quiet, withdrawn pickup at 3pm

For each age

Preschool (3–5)

“You don't have to tell me about your day.”
“I have a snack ready. We can just sit.”
“I missed you.”

The download comes when they are ready. Front-loading questions trains them to shut down at pickup.

School (5–12)

“No questions, I promise. Snack first.”
“Tell me later, or don't. Either is fine.”
“I'm glad you're home.”

Saying "Either is fine" takes the performance pressure off and usually unlocks the real story.
